Tanzanian executive pushes Africa’s leaders for “a better, more dignified life”

Ali A. Mufuruki believes Africa needs a revolution in leadership. Mufuruki speaks about his home continent from experience as one of Africa’s most seasoned executives. “I hold the view that the problem underlying Africa’s chaos is poor leadership,” he said. “Africa’s elite is failing its people, and we need to do more if our children are to have a better, more dignified life than our own.”

When I was assigned to interview Ali Mufuruki, the Executive Chairman of InfoTech Investment Group Ltd, some of my colleagues scared the hell out of me.

They cautioned me to prepare myself well before approaching him. He is a very tough man, they said. Apart from being rich, he wears many hats which makes him one of the famous and influential people in the country. He is a CEO here, a board chairman of some company there, …you name it.

On Tuesday 20th December 2011, the largest Woolworths store in Africa outside South Africa, opened its doors to shoppers in Kampala, Uganda amid pomp and fanfare. Located off the Northern By-Pass road in the new Metroplex Naalya Shopping Mall, the newest Woolworths store will offer the widest range of Woolworths products ever seen in East Africa in a uniquely pristine shopping environment.

Speaking to the press shortly before the store was launched, the CEO of W- Stores Co Ltd Mr. Ali Mufuruki likened the last three months to a roller-coaster ride that saw a new store open at the Grandocean Baraka Plaza in Dar es Salaam in September. Another store was opened at the Tirupati Mazima Mall in the Nsambya area of Kampala in October and now the third store at the Metroplex Mall in Kampala.

Woolworths to expand its brand presence in Tanzania Announces Joint Venture and Opening of New Stores

Woolworths has established a joint venture with businessman and former franchise partner, Ali Mufuruki and plans to expand it’s retail presence in Tanzania & Uganda.

One more store will be opening soon in Dar es Salaam to complement the current three Woolworths stores in Tanzania; which are - PPF Tower, TFA Shopping Mall & Njiro Shopping Complex.
